Deer Garden Time!

So I decided to treat my mom to Deer Garden. In case you didn't know, Deer Garden is a Taiwanese mix Hong Kong mix Malaysian  noodle shop in Richmond.  Don't get me wrong, for they also serve rice though they're famous for their noodles, especially the fish noodles . Anyways on to the noodles.

When we got there, there was a major lineup. We gave our number of people and last name to the waitress and waited. The wait wasn't bad, considering how many people there were. We had to share a table with two other patrons.

We were given a sheet to order. You can choose what kind of broth, noodles, toppings and drinks you want. You can choose two toppings and any extra toppings you choose is an extra $1.25. Cold drinks is an extra $1.00.  I chose the Tom Yum soup with thin rice noodles, sliced beef brisket and fish tofu. My mom chose the Malaysian Laksa with thick rice noodles, sliced beef brisket and beef tendons. I took a picture of my bowl of noodles but some how my phone didn't save. Sorry...

The wait time was about 15 minutes but so worth it for the two gigantic bowls of noodles they presented ya with. The Tom yum soup isn't very spicy but still flavorful. The rice noodles were cooked and the beef briskets, tender. Now my parents are Malaysian and I lived in Malaysia for about 4 years and I know what Laksa tastes like. The soup was pretty good for overseas standards. Lots of coconut milk though, the spicyness level was OK, not too spicy, though a bit bland for my tastes.

On to the drinks, the milk tea I had was too thin but a packet of sugar saved it. The coffee was pretty standard with pre-added cream.

Bottom line, if you aren't a big eater, then share a bowl with some one or get the mini bowls. The normal sized bowls are huge, like 2 times the normal size huge. We had to have our leftovers put into a plastic container for take-away.
I am really Sorry if the picture turns out weird, I am posting this from my phone. Also Sorry for the delayed posts as I just got back from Peru.

Dessert at Pearl Castle

Hey guys.
Lately, I've been swamped with school and other things so I haven't been updating the blog, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten about the blog though, I've been taking pictures ;). Now, on to the most important part, food.

So it was Saturday night so my dad and I went out for dessert at Pearl Castle. As some of you may know, Pearl Castle makes amazing drinks, like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious amazing drinks. Piece of advice, if you're a milkshake person, then order their Taro Milkshake, it's out of this world. The consistency is thick, but not so thick that it should be classified as pudding. You could actually taste the fragrant taro in the drink so you could actually tell it wasn't powder. Beware, this drink contains so many calories, though its nothing compared to whats to come...

Feast your eyes on (cue drumroll) the amazing Red Bean Shaved Ice! (I know, I know, that didn't come out smooth at all.) Anyways, the RDSI was delicious. The red beans were drenched in condensed milk, which made them a bit too sweet, but at the same time gave them a unique texture. They were soft, yet sticky but not mushy, they had a soft stickiness to them. One word to describe them? Exquisite. The bedding of ice was shaved into delicate flakes, complimenting the red beans, condensed milk, and maple syrup. You can also add tapioca pearls and a whole slew of other toppings for $0.50.

Dinner at Kyoto Sushi Japanese Restaurant

Guess what? Tomorrow's Monday...refer to any one of Tardar Sauce's (that grumpy cat) quotes, and that kind of describes what I'm thinking about. I won't bore you with my feelings about Monday.

Sashimi and I went to the Japanese owned Kyoto Sushi for dinner tonight, after reading a lot of hit and miss reviews about the place, we decided to give it a chance. The main thing the other reviewers and bloggers were complaining about was the service. Frankly, the waitress was very courteous and helpful, checking up on us enough to be helpful but not so often that she was annoying. Service was prompt, we only had to wait for about 2-3 minutes after we ordered to be served miso soup. The ambience was brightly lit with a soft light and decorated with Japanese Geisha dolls. We sat in a booth in the corner, the one thing that bothered me about that seat was the drafty smell.

First up, is the miso soup. The soup itself was nothing out of the ordinary. As I said before, it was served within minutes of ordering.

California Roll

We ordered the Combo A, which consisted of 3 pieces of salmon maki roll, 3 pieces of tuna maki roll and 9 pieces of California Roll. The the avocado in the California roll is miniscule compared to other places, but, (prepare yourself for a cliché) you get what you pay for. There was a lot of imitation crab meat stuffed in the sushi though. The rice was a bit on the dry side, the sushi was rolled very loosely, though it seemed like it was 'freshly rolled' which is good. Although the rice used to make the sushi was 'short grain' it tasted like long grain rice.

Tuna and Salmon Maki Roll
Again, the roll was very loose and the rice, dry. Nothing more can be said about the roll. The Combo A was served with pickled ginger a dab of wasabi.

Ebisunomono

The Ebisunomono, was too sweet for my palate. This was served after the sushi combo, it's supposed to 'open' your appetite.

Bento E $12.99

I regretted it the moment it hit the table, more California Rolls? I mentally kicked myself. The Beef Teriyaki was piping hot...because it was nuked. The moment I put it into my mouth, I noticed that one part of the beef was cool, while the other part was hot. The beef also wasn't the freshest, having the taste of meat being in the freezer for too long. The beef was sliced into literally, mini-blankets. Aside from that, it passed, barely. The thickly-sliced salmon tasted fresh, the same goes for the tuna. I don't have a close up picture of the sashimi, but I'll be sure to get one the next time I go for sashimi (teehee).  The Gyoza, which I'm pretty sure you can see, was very oily. I think they used too big a bento for serving this as the food didn't fill up the space as desired.

Seafood Udon $8.99

Sashimi ordered the Seafood Udon. A piece of advice if you order this, eat it while its hot as it is salty. I don't know about you guys but I tried a bit of the soup and found it too salty. The broth consisted of a oyster, a baby crab the size of my pinky nail, a stick of imitation crab meat, a sprig? of broccoli, a sheet of beancurd and some pieces of cuttlefish which had the texture of cuttlefish but the taste of chicken. It was served in a metal (I'm going to call it this because I can and because there is no other way to describe it) cauldron, complete with a handle.

The bottom line is, if you don't have high standards and are just looking for a place to fill you up, Kyoto Sushi Japanese Restaurant is the place for you.

Veneto's Cakes and Pastries

So I've been hearing about Veneto's for quite a while now so I decided to go there. Sashimi and I decided to drop by to pick up a cake (we are both a bit crazy about cake). We deliberated and finally settled on the Black Forest Cake.

Since they were about to close, we brought the cake back.
Le Gateu Foret Noire (ignore the things in the background)

As you can see, there aren't that many cherries in the cake. I don't know about you, but i prefer more cherries in my Black Forest Cake. Although the chocolate cake itself was a bit 'rough' (if you catch my drift), the cream was airy. It tasted fresh, unlike some cakes, which has a 'not-so-fresh' taste to the cream. The sweetness level of the cake was just right, not cloyingly sweet like my 5th birthday cake which was in the shape of Pikachu. The cake was made by my dad's baker friend who got up at 5am to make it but wasn't quite awake yet, it appeared, as he added sugar twice because he forgot. I digress, the price of the cake itself was reasonable. I have yet to try their famed paninis (is that how you spell the plural of panini?) The staff were very friendly and helpful.

They have quite a wide array of desserts: Red Velvet cupcakes, Ginger and Molasses cookies, Sugar cookies and so on. Lunch is also offered, though they stop serving it at 4pm.

Veneto's is worth a try if you're looking for a good but cheap place to score some dessert.

A little about me

Hi guys,
This is my first blog and i hope you guys enjoy it. I'm currently a student and I live in British Columbia, Canada. I'm a self-proclaimed foodie and relish travel and trying new things. Things I love, (not in order [other than food, which obviously is highly ranked.]): My dog (and animals in general), the colour blue and white, music, travel, snowboarding and stand up paddle boarding.  One thing I really regret is not starting a food blog earlier as I have traveled to many countries, each with its own unique cuisine.

Let the journey begin!

P.S. Kudos to my friend Cynthia Cui for coming up with the blog title.
