So I decided to treat my mom to Deer Garden. In case you didn't know, Deer Garden is a Taiwanese mix Hong Kong mix Malaysian noodle shop in Richmond. Don't get me wrong, for they also serve rice though they're famous for their noodles, especially the fish noodles . Anyways on to the noodles.
When we got there, there was a major lineup. We gave our number of people and last name to the waitress and waited. The wait wasn't bad, considering how many people there were. We had to share a table with two other patrons.
We were given a sheet to order. You can choose what kind of broth, noodles, toppings and drinks you want. You can choose two toppings and any extra toppings you choose is an extra $1.25. Cold drinks is an extra $1.00. I chose the Tom Yum soup with thin rice noodles, sliced beef brisket and fish tofu. My mom chose the Malaysian Laksa with thick rice noodles, sliced beef brisket and beef tendons. I took a picture of my bowl of noodles but some how my phone didn't save. Sorry...
The wait time was about 15 minutes but so worth it for the two gigantic bowls of noodles they presented ya with. The Tom yum soup isn't very spicy but still flavorful. The rice noodles were cooked and the beef briskets, tender. Now my parents are Malaysian and I lived in Malaysia for about 4 years and I know what Laksa tastes like. The soup was pretty good for overseas standards. Lots of coconut milk though, the spicyness level was OK, not too spicy, though a bit bland for my tastes.
On to the drinks, the milk tea I had was too thin but a packet of sugar saved it. The coffee was pretty standard with pre-added cream.
Bottom line, if you aren't a big eater, then share a bowl with some one or get the mini bowls. The normal sized bowls are huge, like 2 times the normal size huge. We had to have our leftovers put into a plastic container for take-away.
